The open enrollment period for individual health insurance coverage on healthcare.gov has officially begun and will continue until January 15, the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs announced. During this time, residents with current health coverage through the marketplace can also renew their plans.
In 2024, enhanced subsidies to reduce premiums are available for both new and returning consumers who are eligible. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 expanded the availability of financial assistance through the marketplace, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 extended these benefits through 2025.
Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito reminded residents to shop and compare plans during this period to see if they are eligible for these enhanced subsidies to reduce their premiums. He also emphasized the importance of understanding what a health insurance policy covers and identifying current health care needs such as services, health care providers, and prescription drugs.
Consumers should enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts on January 1. For more information on health insurance, visit cca.hawaii.gov/ins/consumers/health.
