In Bowling Green, Kentucky, a new small business has emerged, and it is the second of its kind in the state. Sweaty Glass, owned by Shane Spickard, specializes in the mesmerizing art of glass blowing.
Spickard’s passion for glass blowing began when he attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. He was captivated by the art form and has been perfecting his craft ever since 2019. Now, he has transformed a garage into his own glass making factory where he creates beautiful glass cups, vases, and other decorations using melted glass. Spickard is not only an artist but also a teacher, offering classes to those interested in learning the art of glass blowing.
The process of creating these stunning glass pieces is intricate and fascinating. Spickard starts by heating the glass until it reaches a malleable state. Then he adds colorful glass frit to create unique designs on the piece. Next, he uses various tools to shape and mold the glass into beautiful forms such as cups and vases. Even wet newspaper can be used to shape the glass before blowing air through a blowpipe to help inflate and shape it further. After smoothing out any rough edges with a torch, Spickard places each piece in a stove for 12 hours to cool down completely before delivering it to his customers.
