The U.S. U-17 team is determined to reach the quarterfinals of the U-17 World Cup for just the second time in 18 years, when they face off against Germany on Tuesday (3:30 am ET) in the round of 16.
The baby Yanks have made it to the knockout stages seven out of eight times since 2001, but have only once reached the semifinals, in 1999 with Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley and Kyle Beckerman leading the way. This year’s squad is headlined by Liverpool youngster Keylor Figueroa, Charlotte forward Nimfasha Berchimas and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Cruz Medina.
In their group stage matches, the U.S. won two out of three games against South Korea and Burkina Faso before falling to France 3-0 in their final game, finishing second in Group E. On the other hand, Germany had a perfect record in their group stage matches against Mexico, New Zealand and Venezuela.
