Richard E. “Dick” Mitchell, 79, of Altoona passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday. Born in Altoona, he was the son of Lester and Kathryn (Estep) Mitchell. In 1965, he married Terry Cowher in Altoona and together they shared 58 years of love and companionship.
Dick’s passion for trains led him to own and operate Dick’s Train Store in Juniata for many years, where he met fellow model train enthusiasts and spent countless hours sharing his knowledge and love of the hobby with them. He also worked as a DJ Spinner for 15 years, entertaining audiences with his music selection.
A devoted family man, Dick was loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his two sons, Grant and Brian, both of Altoona. He served two years in the U.S. Navy as a Radar man before retiring after 31 years of service from Norfolk Southern Corp., where he worked as a machinist and foreman.
Friends are invited to pay their respects to Dick during a visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., located at 719 N Fourth Ave., Altoona. Interment will take place at Alto-Reste Park, where Dick’s memory will live on through the many lives he touched along the way
