The daring operation to free Israeli hostages Fernando Marman and Louis Har in the Gaza Strip was a joint effort involving intelligence services, elite units, and air forces. It lasted for an hour and a half and was meticulously planned by the Shin Bet’s internal intelligence services.
The raid involved several elite units from the Yamam counter-terrorism unit of the police, the Shin Bet, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). At 01:49, Israeli forces stormed the apartment where the hostages were being held with explosives. The three captors were immediately killed, and special forces shielded the hostages with their bodies.
The operation also included ensuring the safe return of Marman and Har to Israel. After a special forces raid, Hamas men opened fire from nearby buildings while Israeli air forces bombarded Hamas military sites and command centers. The escape was covered by Shayetet 13 commando of the navy and 7th Armored Brigade.
Within an hour of being rescued from Rafah, Marman and Har were transported in armored vehicles to Israel before undergoing medical tests. They were found in good condition and were able to reunite with their families once more. Only one man involved in the rescue sustained minor injuries.
Marman and Har are both Israeli citizens with dual Argentine nationality who were kidnapped during a violent attack on Kibbutz Nir Yiyzhak on October 7th along with Clara Marman (62), sister of Fernando’s first wife, companion of his second wife; Gabriela (65), her sister; Mia Leimberg (17), her daughter; Eyal Gerbi (35), son-in-law; Udi Arnonovitch (54), nephew; Ronny Someck (39), brother-in-law; Lila Somick (38), sister-in-law; Asher Somick (28) grandson of Benny Somick former mayor of Netanya city council member for years 2008-2014 ,and Haim Somick(55) brother of Benny Somick former mayor of Netanya city council member for years 2008-2014 . This marks only the second successful operation since the start of Operation Protective Edge that aimed at freeing kidnapped Israelis from Gaza Strip territory controlled by Hamas militants. Another failed mission resulted in killing a hostage while three others managed to escape but later died due to mistakes made by Israeli soldiers during their rescue attempts.
