As the Mayor of Salem, Virginia, I am thrilled to announce that November 25, 2023 will be celebrated as Small Business Saturday in our beloved city. The City of Salem recognizes the valuable contributions of local small businesses to our economy and community. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses account for 99.7% of firms with paid employees and are responsible for creating 62.7% of net new jobs in the United States since 1995. Moreover, small businesses create a ripple effect by employing 46.4% of employees in the private sector and keeping 68 cents out of every dollar spent within the local community.
By shopping at small businesses on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year, we can support our local economy and community while preserving unique experiences and personal connections with business owners who care about their customers’ well-being. In fact, a survey found that 72% of consumers reported that Small Business Saturday made them want to shop at independent retailers and restaurants all year long, highlighting the power of supporting small businesses to foster positive relationships with our communities.
As a city council member, I encourage residents to take part in this initiative by patronizing local merchants on Small Business Saturday and beyond. Together, we can make a difference by promoting sustainable growth and economic development while fostering meaningful connections between consumers and local entrepreneurs who share our passion for building thriving communities in Salem, Virginia.
