Microsoft has announced the hiring of Sam Altman, co-founder and former number one of OpenAI, as part of a new artificial intelligence research team. The company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, wrote on X that the mission continues and that they remain committed to their partnership with OpenAI. Altman is considered a star of Silicon Valley and expressed his excitement about joining Microsoft on the same social network. Meanwhile, Emmett Shear has accepted the position as OpenAI’s interim number one after being asked by the Board of Directors to take on this role. Shear plans to launch an independent investigation within 30 days to shed light on Sam Altman’s firing and the upheaval within the start-up. These announcements come after a tumultuous weekend during which OpenAI’s board of directors fired Sam Altman following a deliberative review process.
