OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, recently expressed high praises for Apple’s Vision Pro, a mixed-reality headset that he calls the “second most impressive” technology since the iPhone. The Vision Pro allows users to interact with digital media integrated with the real world. It is priced at $3,500 and has been described as having the potential to be a game-changer much like the iPhone was over 15 years ago. However, Altman clarified that he considers the Vision Pro to only be the second most impressive technology, and did not elaborate on what he feels is the most impressive.
Most would assume that he is referring to artificial intelligence and perhaps, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which launched in November 2022. Altman has expressed his belief that AI is on track to have a major impact on the world similar to how the iPhone revolutionized the tech industry. He has also shared his vision of turning ChatGPT into a highly intelligent personal assistant for work. Despite his fondness for the technology, Altman has publicly critiqued its name, calling it “horrible” but likely too popular to be changed.
In an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, Altman praised Apple’s Vision Pro as being one of two technologies that are poised to change the world in a significant way. While he did not specify what was number one on his list, many would assume it is artificial intelligence and specifically OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 was seen as a major breakthrough in AI technology and it has already been used by millions of people worldwide.
