In light of the ongoing African swine fever epidemic, a large protest is being organized tomorrow in Retkovci at 10 a.m. The event is open to all farmers, livestock farmers and citizens who wish to save Croatia’s countryside. The main objective of the demonstration is to put an end to the euthanasia of healthy pigs and to call for a law that allows the circulation and slaughter of healthy pigs.
However, concerns have arisen regarding the appointment of Duško Pavlik as president of the trade union. In September of this year, Pavlik was named in a criminal report for moving pigs in violation of the ban within the restriction zone, which is believed to have contributed to the spread of African swine fever in the area. Despite this information, Pavlik was presented as the leader of the new union at a press conference. When asked about the criminal complaint, Tomislav Pokrovac from Stožer for the defense of Croatian countryside expressed disinterest and denied any wrongdoing by Pavlik. On the other hand, Croatia’s Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that even one infected pig can cause severe consequences and that measures and programs are in place to compensate farmers for their losses.
