The newly elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, has expressed his support for the Ukrainian cause, giving hope to the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Diplomatic advisor Igor Zhovkva believes that there is potential for a summit between Ukraine and Latin America with Milei in power.
Zhovkva expressed confidence that relations between Ukraine and Argentina will intensify, citing a message from Zelensky to Milei congratulating him on his victory and thanking him for his support of Ukraine. He also mentioned that any international leader who supports Ukraine is welcome to visit.
The advisor reaffirmed Zelensky’s willingness to visit Latin America if invited and encouraged Milei to join other leaders in supporting the Ukrainian Peace Formula, which aims to restore peace. There is a possibility of Argentina hosting a summit between Ukraine and Latin American countries with Milei’s presidency.
Zhovkva noted that Milei has repeatedly expressed support for Ukraine and condemnation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He highlighted the potential for bilateral relations between Ukraine and Argentina, particularly in the agricultural sector.
Earlier this year, Ukraine made it a priority to gain support in Latin America. Zelensky has invited Latin American leaders to visit Ukraine, but has not yet received a positive response. Milei, who is a libertarian, is likely to adopt a more pro-Ukraine stance and has publicly criticized Putin.
